Lim Chu Kang Road: Carriageway and Runway

Picture: You may have seen this Paya Lebar Airbase runway during its Open House, what about the one at Lim Chu Kang Road?

Lim Chu Kang Road: Carriageway and Runway

The RSAF conducted a two-day exercise at Lim Chu Kang Road on 29 November and 30 November 2008. Various aircrafts (like the F-5 and F-16 fighter aircrafts and E-2C airborne early warning aircraft) took off and landed on a stretch of Lim Chu Kang Road after the RSAF’s Air Power Generation Command (APGC) specially prepared it for the event.

The road received intensive cleansing treatment to remove bus stops, lampposts, debris and other obstacles that may endanger aircrafts. No public traffic was allowed during the entire exercise.

If you think of racing your car along this stretch of road as if you were flying an F-16 fighter jet, think again. There are signboards that warn of cameras along this long isolated stretch of road in Lim Chu Kang.

Heritage enthusiasts would know that a bus stop along Old Choa Chu Kang Road that was built in the 1970s has been conserved for posterity. These heritage lovers may want to make their way over to Lim Chu Kang Road (which was built in the 1980s) – for the thrill of walking along a makeshift runway in Singapore that is outside an airport or airbase. This runway project was first conducted along Lim Chu Kang Road in 1986.

I wonder if the speed cameras were switched on to engage these speeding vehicles during the RSAF exercise?
