Body Worlds Cycle of Life exhibition Singapore

My spouse and I were rather apprehensive when we first considered bringing our three young kids to the Body Worlds and the Cycle of Life exhibition. Taboo topics like death, and views of human anatomy that would normally be hidden from public view risked being brought up and discussed.

In the end, we believed the educational merits outweighed other sensitive issues. We showed them pictures from the advertisements, sought and obtained consent from our children before paying a visit to the Body Worlds and the Cycle of Life exhibition in Singapore recently.

If you have not heard about this Body Worlds and the Cycle of Life exhibition at the Singapore Science Centre, visit the Body Worlds Singapore website for news on the bits and pieces of the real human anatomies on display.

Visitors without a medical background will not be lost in the labyrinth of tissue specimens and glass-boxed exhibits. If you take the time to watch and listen to video displays and to read the printed materials on the exhibits, the materials that are presented in a logical sequence from conception to retirement can be educational and enlightening.

Beside human bodies, there were also several breathtaking displays of animals like giraffe and horse.

Not everything displayed was focused on bodies at the Body Worlds Cycle of Life exhibition Singapore. There were panels highlighting the healthy lifestyles of centenarians and how one can keep physically and mentally protected by adopting positive dietary and lifestyle choices.

My children did not experience any nausea or vertigo before, during or after the show. Plastination, the process that transformed the real bodies into museum-quality exhibits, took away the oozy bits of blood. The good thing too was the lack of smell from the specimens.

What's left on the tables and inside glass enclosed spaces were specimens that looked like ... what's the word to describe ... models? sculptures? ... man-made objects of real (wo)men?

I must add that looking at these immortalized beings that were once confined to mortuaries and medical school dissection halls can potentially be an event of great horror, fear, irritation or other emotional feelings. 

I would classify this exhibition as an offbeat activity for the purpose of writing for Seen This Scene That. Even though it is educational in nature, only you can decide for yourself if you want to see it.

Da Vinci | Mona Lisa In Singapore (The Exhibition)

Admirers of Leonardo Da Vinci will know that he was a genius of his time. Inventor, artist, scientist, engineer, sculptor, anatomist, biologist, musician, architect, philosopher... all these apply to the man who has an exhibition at the Singapore Science Centre that revolves around his famous and fabulous creations.

Others may find something familiar if I mention the book 'Da Vinci Code' that was made into a movie starring Tom Hanks. Or perhaps the painting of a smiling lady called 'Mona Lisa' may strike a bell in some of you.

Best of all, if you know nothing about Da Vinci and his wonderful creations, visit the Science Centre today to find out more about the Da Vinci fuss.

Of the galleries at the Da Vinci – The Genius exhibition in Singapore Science Centre, the Secrets of Mona Lisa display is the most alluring gallery to see. Find out why people are raising eyebrows over the masterpiece painting of an apparently 'eyebrow-less' Mona Lisa.

I had the chance to get acquainted with Mona Lisa, the painting, years ago in the Louvre Museum in Paris and now my kids can get their turn in Singapore, even if it is only a photocopy of it.

Meet The President At Singapore Science Centre

Visitors to the Singapore Science Centre will have an opportunity to 'meet' our President at the gallery. He will be there to receive visitors although there is no formal engagement at the Science Centre. What is cool about it is that there are no bodyguards, entourage, lion dances, school bands or tea receptions around him. He will be available throughout visiting hours at the Science Centre to meet you one-to-one.

This is a life-like picture of our President. He turns his head, blinks then looks you in the eye. By the wizardry of electronics and in the vein of Harry Potter, this impressive exhibit featuring President S R Nathan’s portrait is an excellent opportunity for shy visitors to get as close as they want to our President.

Amazing Thing To See In Singapore

The Audio-Kinetica is an amazing thing to see in Singapore. This exhibit is one of my family's favourite Singapore Science Centre sculpture.

Created to represent the vibrancy and dynamism of the Singapore Science Centre, this sculpture is an amazing blend of science with the arts.

We never fail to be awed by the elaborate pathways that move balls around this intricate system that reminds one of a conveyor belt but with impressive bells and amazing whistles.

From the top of the chain assembly, witness how these balls work their way through the system to the bottom of the track. See, hear and be amazed by the visual motions and audible sounds when energy is transformed from potential energy to kinetic and sound energies as the ball rolls, drops, swings, jumps and dances along each stage of the course.

For extra interactivity, there is a handle on the right end of the glass box (not shown in picture) that you can rotate to shoot balls into a hoop. This stand-alone basketball dunk activity is, however, not connected to the main chain assembly pathway.

Each ball will complete the entire course but once you are hooked on this amazing thing to see, the show never seems to end.

Dinosaur (T-Rex) In Singapore

I saw this dinosaur exhibit near the main entrance to the Singapore Science Centre. It is a life-sized animatronic model of a dinosaur, the T-Rex (Tyrannosaurus) and an advertisement for "Dinosaurs Alive" I-Max movie which has ended its run.

The Tyrannosaurus, or T-Rex, was the largest-ever flesh eating land animal & believed to be capable of running up to 40 km/h. Tyrannosaurus is the most famous dinosaur of all dinosaurs.

This dinosaur has shared top billing in many dinosaur movies such as Jurassic Park, King Kong and T-Rex, Back to the Cretaceous. The dinosaur's arms, though short and small, relative to its body, is thought to be capable of lifting weights of 270kg! The mouth, with gigantic sharp teeth, was the most feared and fascinating part of the T-Rex's anatomy.

Life In A Fish Bowl

This Singapore Science Centre exhibit is called 'Life In A Fish Bowl'.

Instead of seeing fishes swim in a glass bowl with the usual aquarium decor, I see fishes swirling around in a spherical room that is filled with cozy trappings of someone's home: a fireplace, sofa, round table, wardrobe cupboard and tiled flooring. There is a cat, presumably a pet, resting inside this room.

This exhibit is called a Termesphere. If you close an eye and observe the Termesphere rotate, you will note some interesting effects. The Singapore Science Centre information board explains that this illusion is created by fitting a six point perspective on a sphere.

Besides teaching science with this exhibit, I wonder if there is a deeper comment. Are the fishes representative of mankind? Are we behaving like these fishes, keeping routine within our own boundaries?

Kinetic Garden, Singapore Science Centre

Children looking for a free outdoor garden to play and to learn would jump for joy on discovering the Kinetic Garden at the Singapore Science Centre. The high-tech children's playground is a hotbed of scientific learning in a fun-filled outdoor environment at No. 15, Science Centre Road, off Jurong Town Hall Road.

The Kinetic Garden grew out of a S$2.5 million investment by the Singapore Science Centre to teach the relationships between scientific principles and phenomena which would otherwise be impossible or difficult to create in an indoor setting.

I saw children and even adults attempting to interact with the various Singapore Science Centre exhibits at the 7000 square metre Kinetic Garden. There was also a 200 seater amphitheatre within the Kinetic Garden with a pavilion, but at the time of my visit, there wasn't any outdoor science demonstrations or performances to entertain my children.

In any case, we were not short on entertainment as there were many attractive exhibits at the Kinetic Garden. A few of these exhibits outside the Singapore Science Centre facade caught our undivided attention.

The bright red lips of the Echo Tube was one of these attractions at the Kinetic Garden. We could not resist calling out into the tube to listen to our eerie echoes. The bounce of sound waves as they reflected off the sides and closed-end tube to return back to our ears brought a strange whine.

The Sculpture of the Impossible Triangle was another engaging exhibit. Through a peep hole, your eyes get deceived into seeing a triangle but from other angles, no amount of imagination would turn that disjointed sculpture into such a triangular sculpture.

Other interesting exhibits included the Energy Machine, the Water Maze, the Sundial and the Solar Fountain. These attractions at the Kinetic Garden of the Singapore Science Centre are learning exhibits that are best experienced on a hands-on basis.

A visit to the Kinetic Garden at the Singapore Science Centre will certainly keep your children happy and challenge them mentally.
