National Family Day Out

National Family Day Out 2009

Photograph: I'm planning to spend time to share sunset with family on Family Day Out. What about you?

Everyday should be a 'National Family Day Out' day.

Really. A day specially for every family to spend time together out of the home in the numerous wonderful places of Singapore.

That is if you can afford to coordinate and manage your work life, school life, social life and all other forms of your busy busy lives for protected time to be with family.

If like me, you are tied down by a million and one things to do everyday, then a 'National Family Day Out' to be held on 30 May 2009, as designated by the National Family Council, is the perfect excuse to bring your family out for a day of family bonding. This one day event is part of the larger National Family Celebrations that will run from 30 May 2009 to 28 June 2009 during the national school holidays.

To keep your family occupied with all that free time, organisers of the National Family Day Out have put together a string of family-friendly activities at the Singapore River near the Asian Civilisations Museum from 10am to 6pm this Saturday, 30 May 2009.

This National Family Day Out Carnival will include activities like:

Meet & Greet Ben 10, the young animated hero who wears the Omnitrix like a second skin.

Rock Ban Family Battle auditions - a novel uber-cool way for kids and their parents to strut their stuff like MTV stars.

LEGO Family Building Competition - a contest that uses LEGO bricks to cement family ties.

I Love Children Ambassadors performance

Make Breakfast Time Family Time - a talk that mixes food and family relationships into a potent recipe for family bonding.

Starfari Puppet Show - a cute song and dance routine by lovable puppets that reinforces family bonding without strings attached.

Busking activities - to raise funds for the Community Chest.

Plus many prizes to be won at the National Family Day Out Carnival 2009.

Even if you do not participate at the carnival, you can still celebrate National Family Day Out in your own preferred way, at your own time and at your own pace.

After all, there is no need to be rigid with the dates and structure of your own Family Day Out. As long as you realize that family time is worth the priority, you will naturally find the time and space to celebrate your own family day out.

For the latest programmes, activities, freebies and promotions for the family during National Family Day Out, visit www.nfc.sg.

SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009

SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009

It's that time of the year again for me to decide if I should participate in the SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009.

The decision is not whether to run in SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009 or not. It's purely a personal choice on choosing the 6km fun run or to challenge myself in the 10km quarter marathon of Singapore Bay Run 2009.

All the races bring runners across the scenic Benjamin Sheares Bridge which is why it is also called the Sheares Bridge Run. The Singapore Bay Run also combines the Army Half Marathon where you will see lots of youngsters. The staggered start times are good ways to separate runners and allow everyone more space for a comfortable and enjoyable run.

I remember last year's race was peppered with lots of musical performers, cheerleaders and school bands. They were very effective in lifting spirits and bringing cheer to runners. Unlike last year, this year's SAFRA's 21 km Singapore Bay Run 2009 route does not take runners through the scenic Marina Barrage and anyway it is beyond me to attempt this distance this year.

The last day to qualify for the SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009 early bird discount is on 31 May 2009. If I decide to go for the 10km route, I save $10. For the 6km fun run, there is no difference in savings. If I run in the 10km route, I would also be separated from my family members if they choose to join the fun run.

More than just the SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009 savings as an early bird participant, the decision will also impact my training routine. If I were to step up from the 6km fun run that I participated in last year to the 10km Singapore Bay Run 2009 challenge this year, I would need to do more than the usual casual runs.

This decision on the 6 or 10 km SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009 run is for me (and my family) to make.

My readers who plan to take up the challenge at the Singapore Bay Run 2009 need to decide for themselves when they wish to sign up before the early bird window of opportunity closes. Members of the public can also join the SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009.

Regardless of which race I choose to run, I shall post about the SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009 after completing the race.

See you at the SAFRA Singapore Bay Run 2009!

Park Camping Permit

Park Camping Permit

With the school holidays approaching this June, you may want to consider camping in the parks of Singapore.

Park camping is a fun, family-friendly and free way to enjoy family bonding. Friends, classmates and colleagues may even want to use camping as a unique way to get to know one another better.

However, there are some administrative changes to the system of booking a camping permit recently.

NPark camping permits in five coastal parks of Singapore are now required for ALL days of the week. This includes weekdays, weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

Image: Park camping permit required before you park your tent in Singapore coastal parks.

If you plan to camp out in these five parks of Singapore, namely:

Changi Beach Park - Between Carpark 1 to Carpark 4 and Carpark 6 to Carpark 7)

East Coast Park - Area D and Area G

Pasir Ris Park - Area 1 and Area 3

West Coast Park, Area 3

Sembawang Park, Area A

then a camping permit must be obtained. You need to note that there are now designated areas for your camping at these parks.

In the good old days, you just plonk your tent at the beach park and wait for the park ranger to turn up to issue you a ticket after looking through your NRIC. With effect from 15 Apr 2009, you must apply for a camping permit from any of the 500 AXS machines island-wide as well as through the internet at http://www.axs.com.sg before you set up tentage.

A park camping permit is valid for 1 day from 9am to 9am the following day. Each person or camper will be able to apply for a maximum of 8 days per month.

Apart from the five parks mentioned above, camping is also allowed at Noordin and Mamam Beaches at Pulau Ubin. Camping permits are not required at these sites but for safety reasons, campers are advised to inform the officers at Pulau Ubin Police Post on the day they are camping.

There are other details to note before you apply for park camping permit in Singapore.

1. Permits are required for all camping activities which involves set up or erecting of tent.

2. Camping is allowed only within the designated campsite(s). Open fire or stoves are not allowed.

3. Applicant is required to register the particulars of every person staying in the same tent.

4. A NRIC/FIN cannot be used for more than one permit per park per day.

5. Leaving behind trash is an act of litter, liable for a fine of $300.

6. You must declare that you have a permanent housing address in Singapore before you can apply for a camping permit.

Currently no charges are applicable for camping permits, although this may change if the beaches get too congested. I would not be surprised if charges are levied in future, to reduce park camping congestion, the way our roads are ERP regulated. Perhaps they may call it 'ECP' - electronic camp pricing.

Do you have any experience with the booking of a camping permit recently? Share with Seen This Scene That in the comments below.

Da Vinci | Mona Lisa In Singapore

Da Vinci | Mona Lisa In Singapore (The Exhibition)

Admirers of Leonardo Da Vinci will know that he was a genius of his time. Inventor, artist, scientist, engineer, sculptor, anatomist, biologist, musician, architect, philosopher... all these apply to the man who has an exhibition at the Singapore Science Centre that revolves around his famous and fabulous creations.

Others may find something familiar if I mention the book 'Da Vinci Code' that was made into a movie starring Tom Hanks. Or perhaps the painting of a smiling lady called 'Mona Lisa' may strike a bell in some of you.

Best of all, if you know nothing about Da Vinci and his wonderful creations, visit the Science Centre today to find out more about the Da Vinci fuss.

Here's a youTube video to get you started:
(click here for video of Da Vinci exhibition if you can't view it)

Of the galleries at the Da Vinci – The Genius exhibition in Singapore Science Centre, the Secrets of Mona Lisa display is the most alluring gallery to see. Find out why people are raising eyebrows over the masterpiece painting of an apparently 'eyebrow-less' Mona Lisa.

I had the chance to get acquainted with Mona Lisa, the painting, years ago in the Louvre Museum in Paris and now my kids can get their turn in Singapore, even if it is only a photocopy of it.

Shopping Places In Singapore

Photograph: New shopping place in Singapore.

Shopping Places In Singapore

It has to happen, this post on shopping places in Singapore. How do I reconcile 'shopping' with Seen This Scene That's passion on places of interest, family-friendly things to do and offbeat activities?

Simple, because shopping can satisfy these objectives. Singapore has many marvelous shopping places to suit every taste, desire and passion.

And why not shopping? Shopping is a family-friendly activity. Shopping malls are places of interest. New shopping centres can offer offbeat activities.

Families need to shop for things. Men need to buy stuff at shopping places. Women shop at shopping places. Children also need to get time out at shopping places.

Shopping is a favourite activity that my readers are familiar with and I am sure you are more knowledgeable about shopping trends, shopping designs, shopping bargains, shopping discounts and usual shopping related local knwoledge.

My shopping style is considered short and sharp. I decide what I want or need to get, target a particular shop or shopping place, find the best route, best parking, least crowded time, etc, to get in and get out with my shopping purchase. And I am done.

This meticulous method of shopping does not apply when I am out shopping in malls with spouse and kids. Because at those times, shopping is transformed into a family time-out, to be enjoyed at leisure.

At times, we linger from top floor to ground floor of brand new malls to savour the cold air-conditioning, the attractively-designed shop interiors, the constant flow of fellow shoppers. At other times, it is to linger over a meal and to watch the crowd hurry us by.

In the hot humid tropical weather of Singapore, large shopping malls are a great place to escape the heat. When I am done taking photographs in the parks, gardens and outdoor spaces in Singapore on a hot day, the chill of mall breeze and a sip of cold drink is something I look forward to.

How do you prefer to do your family shopping at shopping places in Singapore?

See more shopping places. Live more life.

Durian In Singapore Park

Durian In Singapore Park

The durian fruiting season in Singapore is now on. If you visit Choa Chu Kang Park, you may spot the durian trees laden with durians.

There are signs like this particular one planted in the parks of Singapore. Take care if you pass through such parks filled with durian trees, as a falling durian fruit is a dangerous object.

These fruits in Choa Chu Kang Park belong to NParks, who will dispatch contractors regularly to clear the fallen durians.

Fun Free Places For Kids

Fun Free Places For Kids At International Museum Day 2009 Celebration

Image NHB's IMD 2009: No need to fly overseas to look for fun free places for kids.

Are you looking for fun and free places to bring your kids for a visit? Why not take a look at the various museums and activities around Singapore during International Museum Day (IMD) 2009 celebrations from 23 May 2009 to 31 May 2009.

This year's IMD 2009 theme is 'Holiday Fun at Home!'. With a strong emphasis on families and kids, IMD 2009 aims to instill a museum-going culture especially among families with young kids.

The list of fun and free places your kids can enjoy is impressive. During the 10-day long celebration, you can expect activities like puppet and storytelling performances, art and craft workshops (doll making, clay sculpture) and an interactive playground for young children.

Inspiring events like a Chinese culture medley, Chinese calligraphy, martial arts and dance, paper lantern making at the Asian Civilisations Museum, a healthy ice-cream making at Healthzone, fun adventure trails at Baba House and the National Archives of Singapore, and the “I Can Guide” programme at the Peranakan Museum, which trains children to become museum guides of their own peers, are there for all to enjoy.

On Open House Days, the public can gain free entry into the nooks and crannies of our museums for some fun at our world-class exhibitions. Besides all NHB museums, families can visit for free the Marina Barrage, NEWater Visitors Centre, Malay Heritage Centre and red dot Museum on 31 May. Senior citizens can join in the fun as well as they receive free entry to all NHB museums, Fort Siloso on Sentosa and the Malay Heritage Centre on 25 May.

There is also a fun SMS contest to win free 3-Day Family Passes worth $50 each. Details of this contest can be found at the International Museum Day 2009 website.

If you are looking for fun free places for your kids and family to get together, consider visiting the museums and other attractions in Singapore during this International Museum Day 2009 celebration.

For more fun free places for your kids to visit, check out IMD 2009.

Woodlands Town Park East Photographs

Wodlands Town Park East Photographs

(1) Woodlands Town Park East Photograph showing the park's sign board.

This photograph of a peaceful outdoor space was taken near Block 109 at Woodlands Street 13. From here, you can walk up the steps or climb the slopes of this hill (Hill 180).

(2) Another Woodlands Town Park East photograph at the top of the flight of steps.

Visitors who manage to scale this hill will be treated to a panoramic view of a Woodlands neighbourhood scene and beyond. At certain points, one can also look directly into the living quarters of dwellers as HDB flats surround most of the park.

(3) Woodlands East Town Park Photograph show a tombstone-like park seat.

Made of stone slabs with a smoothened flat top, the solid rock allows park users to sit or sleep. Couples out on a date will surely find these seating arrangement suitable for their use. In the middle of the day, avoid using them or risk getting burnt like a hot-stone barbecue.

(4) Woodlands Town Park East photograph of an unpaved route that other visitors have taken.

If you follow this path, it will lead to the base of the park at its western end near Marsiling Secondary School. I saw some park users walk up and down this park in their PT (physical training) attire. With the 10-storey HDB flats as a comparison, this training circuit up and down the park seems like a wonderful way to burn calories and pump up the heart. Navigating the uneven ground is a danger and requires care. Otherwise, an ankle sprain or nasty fall could be the potential side effects.

Places To See In Singapore

Places To See In Singapore

Today I've chosen to present three places to see in Singapore as my quiz of the month.

The theme that you may see in these three photographs of "places to see in Singapore" is Water, or its lack of.

If I had chosen the Merlion spouting water at Singapore's Merlion Park, the bumboats floating along the Singapore River or offered you a photo of the old Big Splash waterslide at East Coast Park, those examples would have been too simple.

These photographs of places that you can see in Singapore were selected to add some degree of difficulty to the quiz. So some of you may find them easy, others may find them difficult.

These pictures selected for the "places to see in Singapore" quiz were taken at various times of the year. Examine the photographs of places that I visited in different corners of Singapore and see if they look familiar.

Do you recognize any of these places that you can see in Singapore?

Participate in Seen This Scene That's "Places To See In Singapore" quiz and join in the fun!

If there are no correct entries, I shall release the answers at the end of the month.

To make this "Places to see in Singapore" quiz more attractive, I shall write an article on the winner and feature his / her blog with lots of link love in Seen This Scene That, with your consent.

Swine Flu Scene

source: CDC - Swine Flu / 2009 Influenza A H1N1

Swine Flu Scene

A novel swine flu virus has emerged on the world scene. Even though the epicentre of the latest swine flu (now called 2009 Influenza A H1N1 virus) is on the other side of the globe in Mexico, the awareness level is high in Singapore.

Singapore has declared DORSCON (Disease Outbreak Response System) Alert Orange. You may have already seen some of the manifestations of this alert status - temperature checks, visitor contact registration, limitation of visitors to hospital, airport screening, travel health alerts, etc.

2009 Influenza A (H1N1) (swine flu) is a new strain of influenza virus that spreads from human to human. The swine flu has claimed lives in the current epidemic. Other milder cases developed symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle ache, and tiredness. (source: MOH)

Flu can be spread when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. The viruses can also be spread indirectly when a person touches a surface with flu viruses on it (for example, a door knob) and then touches his or her nose or mouth. Transmission can also occur when an infected person shares food with others during mealtime without a serving spoon.

There is currently no evidence to suggest that influenza A (H1N1) can be transmitted to humans from eating pork or pork products that have been thoroughly cooked. (source: MOH)

So what can an individual like you or I do when exploring the parks, gardens and outdoor places in Singapore?

The Ministry of Health has made the following recommendations:

Practise good personal hygiene and be socially responsible by:

a. Washing hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and water, especially before touching your eyes, nose or mouth;

b. Turning quickly away from anyone near you if you are about to cough or sneeze, and do not cough or sneeze at him / her;

c. Covering nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose tissue properly in the dust bin after use;

d. Avoiding crowded places if unwell and wear a surgical mask to cover nose and mouth;

e. Staying home from work or school when sick;

f. Using a serving spoon when sharing food at meal times.

Lead a healthy lifestyle to build up immunity:

a. Eat a balanced diet, including plenty of fruit and vegetables.

b. Be active. Do 30 minutes of physical activity at least 5 days a week.

c. Learn to relax and have enough sleep and rest.

d. Do not smoke.

Keep abreast of the latest developments. The swine flu scene may develop in an unpredictable fashion. If you are passionate about visiting the outdoor parks, beaches and reservoirs of Singapore, this swine flu virus should not curtail those activities, if everyone takes sensible precautions.

See more places. Live more life.
