Passion Run 2010

Passion Run 2010

It takes plenty of passion for a person to push his or her body to run 10 kilometres. It takes even more passion if you try to push your body to its limit in order to better your personal best (PB) times or to set a personal 10km run record (PR). Those with the greatest passion put their legs and bodies through training programmes like interval runs, tempo runs, long distance slow runs, core training and the like, week in week out, rain or shine, and feel good at the end of each session.

I guess I must possess similar passion to have taken part in another 10-km race on 22 May 2010. This was the Passion Run 2010 held at Angsana Green in East Coast Park. The race was organized by Geylang Serai 3i Enterprise, Geylang Serai CSC and Geylang Serai Community Club.

The Passion Run 2010 was my first attempt to set a 10K personal best after having done two leisurely races of similar distances (Singapore Marathon 10 km run and 10-km Singapore Bay Run) last year. So did I manage to break a record?

Before I answer that, let me recap my version of Passion Run 2010.

The weather on 22 May 2010 was favourable. A light rain in the morning had displaced the week's hot sun that kept slapping sweat-stained skin. When the Passion Run 10-km race started at about 5.30 pm, it was cool with a little sunlight peering through thick clouds.

I lined up with the second wave of starters for the Passion Run Veteran 10-km race. The second wave of runners consisted of runners from both men and women in the Open and Veteran categories. However this mixed group of runners flagged off at a crawl. With layers of walkers before me, I was trapped in a traffic jam for several hundred metres. In bursts of running and weaving and braking, I found my pace disrupted.

By the time the field of runners opened up, it was almost near the half way point. Just when I could settle into a regular rhythm, I hit a wall. A wall of joggers who made the u-turn for the shorter 5km fun run. Again the weaving through the Passion Run crowd re-started, interspersed with periods of accelerations and decelerations. To make matters worse, many runners were slowing and stopping for drinks along the narrow route as we neared the finish line.

By this time, I stopped looking at my watch to check on my race pace for Passion Run 2010. (It was dangerous to take my eyes off the crowd to look at my watch as I could crash into other runners who stopped running suddenly). Thoughts of any record breaking attempt was not on my radar at that point in my run.

I had hoped to follow through with some faster runners before me but alas I guessed all the faster ones had already filtered their way to the end point of Passion Run 2010. I decided to make the final one-km dash and opened up my stride, all the time still weaving between other competitors.

Finally crossed the Passion Run 2010 finish line with an unofficial time below 59 minutes, which was just beyond my training times achieved in the past three months. My Garmin watch recorded a total distance of 10.1km (The extra 100 metres was probably due to the zig-zag weaving through the field).

Made one conclusion: this Passion Run 2010 at ECP route with its timing and format for 5km and 10km competitive runs using the same tracks is not conducive to setting records. Still, I am happy to create a personal best (PB) in an official racing event, despite some challenges.

The rewards for completing Passion Run 2010? A keepsake medal (plus other goodies) and a valuable learning experience for my racing. I did not stay for the Passion Run 2010 concert and soon found myself stuck in another race: the race to get out of the East Coast Park car park that was jammed with an unbelievable number of vehicles. That story, however, could be another long post.

Shark In Singapore

Shark In Singapore

This is a photograph of a shark in Singapore taken by Seen This Scene That.

It is a shark in Singapore that can be found on a wall somewhere on our little island. I took the shot of this shark in Singapore last year. I think it should still be hanging around in the year 2010.

As it is too high up to touch, I can't be sure if it is a sculpture of a shark or a real Jaws. Under indoor lighting, it looks either fake or dead. This shark in Singapore is certainly not a digital manipulation of Seen This Scene That.

Where can you find this shark in Singapore?

Love Green: Just Bin It

Love Green: Just Bin It

If you love the many parks and nature reserves of Singapore, you will appreciate this "Love Green: Just Bin It" programme. What is this "Love Green: Just Bin It" programme?

Organized by the National Parks Board (NParks), the "Love Green: Just Bin It!" programme is to encourage park users to keep parks and nature reserves free from litter. This programme supports the National Environment Agency's (NEA) new national anti-littering campaign to be launched in June 2010.

As part of this programmme, an online video competition (with a top prize of S$10,000 to be won) has been launched to create awareness and support in spreading the anti-littering message amongst park users.

I encourage all Seen This Scene That readers to read more about it at the link below. Even if you don't plan to create a video, you can also win prizes in two ways: by referring friends to view the videos and by voting online for the winner.

How about some storyboard ideas to get you going?

Suggestion 1:
The Green Bin drops from the sky and lands on a park connector under a beam of light. Head lifting slowly, a wide smile appears on its face that looks like Mr Bean...

Suggestion 2:
A group of teenagers celebrate like there's no tomorrow and create litter around the beach park BBQ pits. The Bin can't stand the sight of litter, fumes and turns into an upsized Green Bin Bulk ...

Suggestion 3:
The Big Bad Green Bin Wolf turns to face a litter bug and says,'I'll huff and I'll puff ... and I'll eat you up!'

Enough of humour. Details about the 'Love Green: Just Bin It' online video contest are provided now:

To qualify for the competition, participants are required to upload their videos on YouTube, and submit the URL of their video, together with their personal details, on the official online form.

Submissions also should incorporate the anti-littering theme, and be filmed in a park managed by NParks. If the submission is animated, it is required to be in a park setting.

There is no limit to the number of submissions.

Closing date: 27 June 2010

What are the prizes for winners of the Just Bin It video competition?

Prizes for the Video Competition:
Top Prize : S$10,000 x 1 winner
2nd Prize : S$5,000 x 1 winner
3rd Prize : S$2,000 x 1 winner
Consolation Prizes: S$500 x 6 winners

Prizes for the Voting Contest:
100 pairs of movie tickets

Prizes for Referral of competition videos to friends:
100 pairs of movie tickets

If you want to get inspiration, check out sample videos on the NParks site. Better still, visit the following parks in Singapore to catch the Just Bin It mascot in action:

Angsana Green

Angsana Green Singapore

I came across the place 'Angsana Green' Singapore when I signed up for the upcoming 10-km racing event 2010 Passion Run earlier this year. Angsana Green is a large green outdoor plot of land.

If you are expecting a garden filled with Angsana trees at Angsana Green, you will be disappointed. Angsana Green is a rather bare area that is cleared of shrubs and trees. That could be the reason why it is popular as a venue for mass participation events, like this distance running race that I am participating.

Above: Photo of East Coast Park.

But where in Singapore is Angsana Green? Angsana Green can be found at East Coast Park along Singapore's coastline. Most of you will be familiar with the location of this 15-km long coastal park. However do you know where is Angsana Green along the East Coast Park?

Help on Angsana Green's location can be obtained from the National Park Board's site which has a map of EC park showing the location of Angsana Green. The link to Angsana Green is here. I have reproduced the map here for your convenience. It is classified under Area E of the Npark's East Coast Park map.

Public Transport to Angsana Green is available:
* Service 401 to East coast Park Service Road (Available on Sundays and Public Holidays ONLY)
* Services 16, 155, 196 to Marine Crescent or Marine Terrace and walk across the underpasses or overhead bridge.
* Service 36 (from Changi International Airport) to City; alight at Carpark F3, outside SPARKc@Marine Parade
* Services 16, 31, 36, 55, 76, 135, 155, 196, 197 and 853 to Marine Parade Road.(Service 853 is available only on Sundays)

If you drive to Angsana Green, park at the nearest car parks. They are car park F1 and car park E2 (coupon parking).

Other features nearby to Angsana Green: Cable Ski, East Coast Lagoon Food Villlage, Sand Castle Building, Our Family Corner, Bedok Jetty and the Xtreme Skate Park.
