This map of Sembawang Park's bbq pit can be obtained from NParks online BBQ booking system.

A few of the pits are scattered within Sembawang Park. Many other outdoor public bbq pits are lined along the edge of Sembawang Park, with a cool view of the sea. Strong breeze from the coast can make fire starting a tricky affair here. There are public shelters next to the pits but these shelters cannot be booked online. It is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Outdoor public barbecue enthusiasts should book a bbq pit early on weekends in order to get a pit for your bbq party. There is a fee that you need to pay after online booking of BBQ pit is done.

Changi Beach BBQ: BYOP 2 (Bring Your Own BBQ Pit)

For youngsters who are looking to book a public BBQ pit at Changi Beach Park, this is a photograph to help you orientate yourself to the barbecue place.

This is the Changi Beach Park's Bring Your Own Pit (BYOP) Number 2 actual site. It is located at the junction of Telok Paku Road and Nicoll Drive between carpark 1 and carpark 2.

On the NParks' BYOP BBQ booking site, you can find this BYOP bbq site at Area A of Changi Beach Park.

There are five BYOP BBQ sites strung along the beach, of which this is BYOP number 2. BYOP BBQ site number 2 has close proximity to amenities like toilets, shelter, tables and benches. However it does not come with a BBQ pit.

The BBQ BYOP booking fee (currently $16) is the same as those that come with a BBQ pit even though BYOP lacks a pit. Do remember to bring your own BBQ pit if you book this BYOP site. Otherwise you would have to make a return trip home to collect your BBQ pit back to this BYOP site.

Some other tips to note about booking this Changi Beach Park's BYOP Number 2.

* Each booking is from 12noon to 8am of the following day.
* Your booking is for the BBQ pit / BYOP space and not for any shelter.
* Once your booking is confirmed, there will be no refund, changing of date and/or BYOP/pit.
* Leaving behind rubbish is an act of littering.

For my readers who are interested in organising a BBQ party, there is a barbecue pit available to the public at Mandai Tekong Park in Woodlands Avenue 5.

You can read more about the Mandai Tekong Park here, on its location and about its park amenities. It is a short walk from 888 Plaza, Admiralty MRT Station (NS10) and the Woodlands MRT Station (NS9).

This bbq pit is located in a secluded spot, with trees acting as a screen on one end, providing privacy from the children's playground and jogging path. The bbq pit comes with tables, chairs and an open area for BBQ users to party.

Singaporeans, permanent residents and foreigners who stay a stone’s throw away from Stagmont Park in Singapore may have several concerns. At the same time, despite the economic recession raging throughout the globe, they are in for some pleasant bonuses.

First, the bad news: Stagmont Park is a beehive of activities for children, older kids and young adults. Think noise pollution. Think loss of peace and quiet. Due to the attractive children’s playground and a multi-purpose court for sports-related activities, Stagmont Park can be a focal point of screaming children and loud youths in basketball frenzy.

Another piece of bad news for residents living around Stagmont Park: candle wax defacement on park properties from use of lighted candles during past mooncake festivals. There may not be serious incidents that lead to open fires, but the possibility cannot be discounted.

And the bonuses (or good news)? Plenty.

The design layout of Stagmont Park is exquisite. Two arched bridges made of stone add a colonial Zen-like charm to Stagmont Park. A parched river, that connects two dry pools, cuts Stagmont Park into two unequal halves. With imagination, I could picture myself jumping into the ‘river’ to try my hand at ‘longkang’ fishing.

A fitness station laden with exercise equipment provides good incentives for the physically inactive to turn over a new leaf. Foot reflexology amenities cater to the elderly population, with a raised shelter built on stilts providing peaceful resting places for those physically strained.

Stagmont Park has a fun walkers trail for residents in this part of the island. Five rounds of walking around the perimeter of Stagmont Park (about two kilometers distance) will give a good workout for moderately active residents. A signboard offers detailed advice on how to perform warm-ups, stretching exercises and explains the many benefits of exercise.

BBQ pits, available for rental use by residents at Stagmont Park, will turn this area into a focus of feasting and family fun on some evenings.

Landscaping with unusual trees and interesting garden plants packed into Stagmont park raises the sensory experience by more than a notch. A Show Garden takes pride of place near the middle of Stagmont Park. It has a notice with a sign: “100,000 Native Plants @ South West Show Garden is a community initiative to root the community to live, work and play together in the South West District, by reinstating the natural heritage of Singapore.”

Stagmont Park seems to possess qualities that make it a good place to live, work and play. What do you think?

West Coast Park Singapore: Best Playground In The West

West Coast Park Singapore: Best Playground In The West

I do not know about you, but for my family, 50-hectare size West Coast Park Singapore seems to possess the best kids’ playground in the west of Singapore. This area is located at West Coast Park Car Park 3. This was our conclusion after my family of five turned up for a visit to West Coast Park last Friday evening. West Coast Park’s Adventure-land and children’s playground were also highly recommended by two of my regular readers, yg and panzergrenadier.

Besides personal preferences, various other factors guided us to our conclusion.

Size Matters
When it comes to playground fun, we find that size does matter. The larger space at West Coast Park allows a larger piece of real estate to be developed into playthings for children’s enjoyment. With more plaything structures, the choices increase. This allows even the most finicky child to find something agreeable to his or her taste.

Eclectic Selection
More than that, we find that the selection of playground structures appears more eclectic than the common garden variety allocated to HDB neighbourhoods. Playground planners must have applied more industry to source for such challenging playground structures to seduce kids.

Adventure Park
There are eight playground areas in West Coast Park 3 for your children to select. The ‘toys’ at the Adventureland area 8 are the most challenging and my favourite. Items like Uneven Spring Balance, Spinning Pads and Jungle Bridge require strength and balance to perform. Zipping down the flying fox contraption brought back memories of scouting days as I ‘tested’ the ropes to ensure my kids personal safety. The low, narrow and zig-zag patterned balance beams seemed to mirror the standard obstacle course (SOC) from my National Service days of long ago. For girls and boys who’ve never stepped onto Pulau Tekong, this is the kiddy version of Basic Military Training’s (BMT) introductory grounds that all National Servicemen must go through.

Children’s Playground
A multiplex of interconnected structures form up to provide playground entertainment for children who raid West Coast Park’s playground. Children can pretend to be train drivers at the head of this structure, while others can climb its belly to play passengers on this playground train.


Open Natural Spaces
A sheltered stage with night lighting fronts an open space near beachside. Soccer players, kite flyers, Frisbee throwers and practitioners of other sports and games are free to utilize this huge open area. Short strips of boardwalk allow nature appreciation at the marsh garden and a pond, located at the fringe of West Coast Park. Bird watchers will love the bird watching opportunities here.

Fast Food Convenience
At the end of a day’s exertions, replenish fluid loss and restore empty stomachs at the lone fast food restaurant at McDonald’s where gourmet coffee and cakes are served too. Personal hygiene can be practiced at the public washrooms here as well.

Other activities
Overnight camping is allowed. Cycling, roller blading, in-line skating, walking, jogging and other activities are also common sights here. Tranquil Sunset & Sea Views
Lastly one of the main reasons why a place is called a park is the tranquil setting where wide spaces surrounded by greenery are premium features highly sought after by park users. A short pier at the rocky shore is the perfect place to enjoy the sea breeze and watch a lovely sunset over West Coast in a tranquil setting.

Easy Accessibility
For maps, click Map of West Coast Park here. Free car parking is available next to the park along West Coast Highway. Bus stop. Service 176 stops directly in front of West Coast Park. Alternatively, services 30, 51, and 143 bring you to the front of Clementi Woods Park (West Coast Road) and a 5 minutes walk through West Coast Link will lead you to West Coast Park Area 3 (near to the Adventure Playground).

Castle Beach
If you ever need help to learn how to build sandcastles at East Coast Park, look no further than Castle Beach near Area E along East Coast Park. This fairy-tale structure that stands more than three times my height, doubles as a convenient meeting place and a focal point for photograph hunters as well as novice sandcastle builders.

While not as elaborately designed as Neuschwanstein Castle in the Bavarian Alps of Germany, the East Coast Park version still looks pretty despite its low-budget appearance. A notice board on Castle Beach reveals that it is a non-profit organization proving sandcastle team building activities for children from under-privileged background, high-risk families and physically challenged conditions (website of non-profit Castle Beach here)

In-line Skates and Bicycle Shops
Teenagers and teens-at-heart who like in-line skating and cycling but did not bring their in-line skates or bicycles will rejoice at the presence of in-line skate rental shop and bicycle rental shop. The in-line skate and bicycle shops are conveniently co-located opposite the reflexology garden .

I spoke to two teenagers minding the in-line skate shop as there were no signboards detailing their charges. They revealed that in-line skate rental costs $10 for the first hour, free for the second and $7 per hour thereafter. Rentals of in-line skates must be returned to their in-line skate shop on time or risk incurring extra charges. The bicycle shop owners displayed their charges prominently. It offered a range of bicycles to choose from, with prices ranging from $6 per hour to $12 per hour for top of the line bicycle models.

Book Barbecue (BBQ) Pit
Barbecue (BBQ) Pit number 51 at Area E stands as the nearest barbecue (bbq) pit to Castle Beach for those interested to book a bbq pit for an evening barbecue. If the barbecue (bbq) party bombs out because of rain, you can always treat your friends and guests to ready-to-eat meals at East Coast Seafood Centre or East Coast Lagoon Food Village.


Fitness and Foot Reflexology Corners, Printed Lanes
Children and their health-conscious parents can work out at the fitness corner nearby as well as at a small foot reflexology garden. Visitors to East Coast Park's beaches can also look for pictures printed into lanes at East Coast Park's shore to decide what to do. Walk if you see the big foot imprints under your feet. Or cycle / in-line skate if you see the logos for cycling / in-line skating. Despite these aids painted onto the lanes, keep an eye out for other East Coast Park users who blatantly ignore these guidelines.

Car park, Meeting Point
The nearest car park is at the car park E2 near the East Coast Lagoon Food Village of East Coast Park. Standard coupon parking rates still applies here. As there is a popular food centre next to this car park, expect to queue for a parking lot during peak dining hours and on weekends. If you come by other transport means, arrange to meet up with your family and friends at Area E Meeting Point. How would you recognise such a Meeting Point? Look for a brightly coloured stack of yellow cubes that stick out from the ground of East Coast Park.

As a note to my readers from overseas, East Coast Park is a 15-kilometre long stretch of sandy beaches, 185 Hectare in size, on Singapore's southern shores that is open to the public without admission charges. If you do visit our little island, a visit to East Coast Park is a worthwhile half-day to full-day tour to meet locals, sample local cuisine and experience a piece of Singapore life.

Punggol Park Is A Scenic Place To Visit For A Jog

You would think that a park named “Punggol” ought to be located somewhere in Punggol neighbourhood estate, rather than its present address at the junction of Hougang Avenue 10 and Hougang Avenue 8. This surprise surfaced when I tried to search for this place on a street map for my maiden visit there for a recent walk and jog.

If you drive to this park, you will likely choose to park at the park’s carpark. Near the small coupon-paying carpark with less than twenty lots along Hougang Ave 8 is a restaurant that allows diners a choice of al-fresco dining by the water’s edge or air-conditioned meals at sit-down tables.

This 16-hectare park has a lovely 5-hectare lake as its centerpiece of attraction. Around this scenic lake, visitors can complete a circuit on a purpose-built track. The beautiful landscaped greenery, interspersed with large boulders, appreciably enhanced my jogging experience.

When a photograph-worthy scene presented itself, I could easily find an open bench or sheltered seats to provide non-shake support for my digital camera. These resting points allowed appreciation of Punggol Park’s moderate flow of park users who seemed to respect its scenic tranquility very well. The seats also served as a convenient excuse to spare my lungs and limbs from excessive strain.

Kids from the surrounding neighbourhood populate a children’s playground, while adults occupy themselves at exercise stations in a fitness corner. A small knoll allows park users to organize a quiet family picnic on the slopes, away from unwanted stares of joggers and other passers-by.

Punggol Park is a family-friendly place to visit. There are areas for a bring-your-own-pit barbecue, remote-controlled sail and powerboat activities on the pond and in-line skating on the tracks. With enough amenities to satisfy most neighbourhood residents, I enjoyed my visit to this place despite puffing my lungs out during this trip to Punggol Park

Pasir Ris Park has a number of barbecue pits. The number and map location of the barbecue pits are well suited for fantastic outdoor picnics. These outdoor picnic places in Pasir Ris Park are often within walking distance to MRT and have great views of the sea.

The barbecue pits come with concrete tables and seats. Families with children can sit and rest or enjoy recreational places along the sandy shoreline.

Visitors to the barbecue pits will love sand castle building opportunities, leisure strolls along the water's edge or just relax to fulfill their recreational needs. There are also pleasant looking shelters large enough for a number of visitors to seek refuge from the sun or rain.

Washroom facilities with clean water for washing, bathing are near to the barbecue pits in Pasir Ris Park. Toilets are within a short walk from the barbecue pits. You can clear your garbage in the many containers provided next to every barbecue pit.

How To Book A Barbecue BBQ Pit At Changi Beach Park, Pasir Ris Park, East Coast Park and other parks In Singapore

Several readers have asked me recently for information on how to book a barbeque BBQ pit at our public parks like Changi Beach Park, Pasir Ris Park or East Coast Park. Book a barbecue BBQ pit and throw BBQ parties that are popular family friendly activities for many Singaporeans. It is also a great way for friends to spend time together, enjoying good BBQ pit cooked food amidst natural spacious sceneries.

I have compiled the information here for other readers who may need to know how to book barbecue BBQ pits in Singapore.

Barbeque BBQ Pit Booking At Parks Of NPARKS
There are three ways to book a National Parks Board barbecue BBQ pit. These are:
(1) Internet Barbecue BBQ pit booking
(2) Phone Barbecue BBQ pit booking
(3) AXS Barbecue BBQ pit booking station

Internet BBQ Pit Booking
The Nparks has an internet bbq pit booking site maintained through AXS. Go to their website (Nparks AXS site) to book a bbq pit.

You will be asked for your choice of date, the name of the park, the BBQ pit booking number as well as other personal contact details. Maps containing bbq pits with numbers are provided on the same site to show you the location of every barbecue bbq pit available on the park that you have chosen to book. After booking, remember to make pit booking payment within 24 hours at the AXS station convenient for you.

Phone BBQ Pit Booking
If you prefer to book a bbq pit through telephone, call this number 6560-2727 from 8am-10pm daily and follow the instructions. Again, remember to make payment within 24 hours to confirm your purchase that you have booked a bbq pit at any AXS station.

AXS BBQ Pit Booking station
There are many of these machines installed all over the island. Check here (AXS online) for the complete list of AXS stations to book bbq pit. At the stations, you can book a bbq pit and complete payment by pressing “Government” and “National Parks Board” buttons to begin. Remember to keep the receipt, as proof of your purchase and booking of bbq pit. Payment after booking via internet or phone must be done within 24 hours at an AXS station to confirm your bbq pit booking purchase.

You should book a barbecue bbq pit at least three days in advance. During popular times when demand is high, you should consider booking a bbq pit much earlier.

BBQ Pit Booking Fee For Barbeque BBQ Pits
The fee to book a barbecue pit and its usage various from $12 to $20 per pit. The lowest priced barbecue (bbq) pits are at Labrador, Punggol and Sembawang Parks. Payment for BBQ pit booking is to be made at AXS stations within 24 hours of internet book.

Bring Your Own Pits (BYOP)
Some parks allow you to bring-your-own-pit BYOP. Essentially you still need to book the site and make payment via AXS stations. In BYOP, you bring your own mobile bbq pit to the park sites.

Precautions To Take
Keep your bbq pit booking permit with you at all times as park rangers may inspect your site.
Beware of wet weather.
Beware of theft and robbery.
Know what to do in the event of emergencies like fire or accidents.
Clean up after use as a matter of courtesy and civic duty.
Do not obstruct other park users by taking up space on the footpaths and cycling tracks.
